Family Medicine Rotation Self-Reflection

How did it go? What have you learned? What can you improve? How do you plan to improve these new skills? Family medicine was an informative, yet gentle start to my clinical year. My preceptor and the office staff were all kind and helpful. The hours were very manageable, usually 9am-5pm. One of the most important things I’ve learned through this experience is the impact that the provider-patient relationship has, especially in outpatient services like family medicine. When interviewing patients, they would often tell me countless times about how much they adored their primary provider there and how much they …

Family Medicine Site Evaluation Presentation Summary

I presented three cases during this rotation: a hypertensive urgency patient, a patient with rectal bleeding, and another patient with hemoptysis. I also presented 10 pharm cards on drugs that I saw during my family medicine rotation. During both site visits I presented these cases with the relevant history with pertinent “OLDCARTS” information, relevant past medical history, surgeries, pertinent positive and negative ROS, and pertinent positive and negative physical exam findings. Along with those elements I concluded with my differential diagnoses, assessment, and plan. The feedback I had received was that my presentations were satisfactory for my first rotation. I …

Reflection on Progress in Clinical Correlations Course from Spring to Fall 2021

Content and focus: My presentations for class this semester included high yield information that I felt was relevant to the PANCE and development of our clinical judgement. I spent a significant amount of time researching information for the topics I was assigned to present on. In the beginning of the year, I would sometimes include too much information in my presentations and would often go over the time limit; this semester, I was able to keep my presentations to about 5 minutes. I used the best sources of evidence, like UpToDate, Osmosis, and previous class lectures for data and easy …

Health Policy Brief: Translation Services

To:  Dr. Howard A. ZuckerFrom:  Warveen OthmanDate:  July 18, 2021Re:  New York State Mandate Requiring Translation Services in All Healthcare Settings Statement of Issue: Should there be a state mandate requiring the use of professional translation services with patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) in all healthcare settings? Although access to translation services have increased in the last few years, there is still a dangerous lack in the use of professional translators due to pressures of efficiency and metrics. Appropriate use of these services by all healthcare providers is necessary to avoid detrimental medical errors. And situations that have risen amidst …

Public Health Thought Paper : COVID-19

Few challenges has the United States been less prepared for than COVID-19. Looking back on the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020, it is obvious that the US could have done much more to prepare for the challenges posed by this pandemic to limit the impact on the wellness and survival of the US population and people around the world. The US’s response was characterized by lack of early action by the federal government, misinformation, and unpreparedness. As the next head of the Public Health Emergency Management Team, what I would have done differently can be summed up …
